Welcome to Baltimore County Public Schools' Resource Wiki for Software, Assistive Technologies,   Web 2.0 Tools, Digital Content, and Resources

The purpose of this wiki is to provide information that will unleash the power of  BCPS licensed digital content and Web 2.0 tools to transform teaching and learning and address the Common Core Standards.

.

The content below and in the Sidebar have been approved for use in Baltimore County Public Schools.  Click on a Web 2.0 tool on the Sidebar for a tutorial on how to use it effectively in your classroom.  If you would like to see a tool added, please contact us so we can help you through the Technology Approval Process.

Check out our newest way to help you select the "just right" Web 2.0 tool:  Digital Bloom's Taxonomy.  Digital tools and resources accessible in Baltimore County Public Schools are aligned to Bloom's Revised Taxonomy.

How to Find Lexiled Reading Material from BCPS Licensed Digital Content
The good news is that BCPS teachers have incredible access to digital content (text and multimedia) to differentiate reading materials for all students AND to address the Common Core goal to provide students with "text of increased complexity."

Keep informed about free tools for teachers.  Let us know which ones are useful and we will work together to add them to our list (on right).

DIRECTIONS:  The links below will take you directly to the Web 2.0 tool or digital resource listed for each task.  Clicking on the links on the Sidebar will:

  • take you to a page that contains information about the tool or resource;
  • provide directions for using the tool or resource in your classroom or library media center;
  • and describe educational applications, including how to differentiate with the tool or resource and a sample lesson plan.

Technology needs to be infused into the curriculum because it's where our society is going. It woudl be deterimental to just teach out students how to read and write and neglect how to use the CPU, blogs, wikis, podcast, movie maker...etc. Once our students leave the high school world and enter into the work force, college, military...etc they MUST know technology in order to survive and produce. If we neglect to do this, we are doing them a diservice.

I agree!!!! Especially about the diservice... teachers need and must use technology to teach.

Technology should be infused in the curriculum because it is the "Information Age." Students need to be prepared for advances in the world and be prepared to problem solve with the latest technology. Technology should also be infused to encourage teachers to take advantage of the technology that is available.

I believe that the best way to reach our students is to meet them where they are. Technology engages students and engaged students learn. I have utilized technology in my classroom often and watched as all the students in the room lept into the lesson. I want to know all I can about available technologies to incorporate.

All opf these technologies have a place in our lessons and will continue to improve the learning in the classroom. I have learned more aobut each technology and feel that I can better incorporate them in lessonas and in the classroom. Voicethread has many potential uses in the development of online activities and wordle can be used to stimulate prior learning recall as well as to summarize.

Technology literacy is the future of our world. It will be just as important to our lives and success as a nation as language literacy. Most professions, if not all, will rely heavily on the ability to effectively and efficiently use technology.

We as teachers not only need to teach them in the ways that they have learned but also keep up with them in order to allow them to fulfill their potential. If we are not using technology, we are holding our students back.

Michelle Boyer said

I agree that we are holding students back if we don't use technology. Teachers also need to be properly trained to properly teach children the information in this. This is the first I have ever used pbworks or wiki.

Just a word about how to integrate Web 2.0 tools into your lessons - plan for it to take much more time than you anticipate AND have another activity or long-term anchor activity that students can work on in the computer lab. This year my students created animoto videos, and one of my classes created their own individual wiki pages as part of my class wiki. They learned how to upload work that they had done and link it to their pages, so they created mini portfolios. However, when you try to get 25 students logged onto animoto or PBworks at the same time, you're asking that website to do a lot of work at once. We learned this pretty quickly. I had students work in groups of about 5 - 10 at a time while other students were working on another activity in the lab. My students were putting together research presentations, so they worked on the Power Point piece of their presentation while the others worked on animoto and on organizing their work on PB works. Don't let this scare you off...it really was pretty easy to manage; you just have to be flexible. Responsible risk taking...

Myfakewall is extremely unstable in its current beta format. I tried to use it with my students, but the site crashes several times a day and at one point it didn't come back for three days. I will not be using that technology with my students again until it is fully established.
